Pottery inspired by nature

I’m Carol Quinn, the maker behind Mountain Sky Pottery in Chattanooga, Tennessee.

I discovered pottery after retiring from a career in business and quickly found that working with clay gave me a completely different kind of creative challenge. I also discovered how much I enjoyed the process of making. What started as a new interest in 2020 has grown into Mountain Sky Pottery and a love of creating functional pieces meant to be used and enjoyed every day.

Much of my inspiration comes from time spent outdoors. I love hiking and being in the mountains, and I’m continually drawn to the landscapes, colors, textures and organic shapes I find there. Those influences often find their way into my work through layered glazes and earthy colors.

Made by hand in Chattanooga

I make my pottery in small batches at Scenic City Clay Arts, a community pottery studio here in Chattanooga. Each piece is made by hand using wheel-throwing and hand-building techniques, so no two are exactly alike.

My hope is simple: to make pottery that feels good in your hands, works beautifully in your home, and brings a little of the outdoors inside.
